Alright, so you can't afford to turbo your POS.

Well, most of us who can't afford to turbo our 240sx's. Usually just go the other route and tell people that we wanna be unique and go for a naturally aspirated build. When really we just can't afford to go SR20, or KA-T or any other option that we have out there, which theres plenty of them..Trust me.

First things first..

Where going to start with the intake first, If you have money you can buy a name brand full intake and all that..But if your on a budget like my self..Heres how your going to want to do it, I'll post the best options in my opinion. Your gonna wanna order an Ebay cold air intake, and where only going to use the piping from it, I'll make a list of filters that are rated to be the best, as well. You'll also be using the MAF sensor adapter from the ebay intake.

Ebay Cold air intake - 25.00
K&N Cold Air Intake - 322.00
Injen Cold air intake - 199.99

Now If you've chosen to go with the ebay one, here goes a list of filters to choose from that I would recommend:

Apexi Air Filter - 64.99
K&N Air Filter - 32.99
Trust/Greddy Sponge Filter - 55.00

Next things next. Headers

The header will increase your hp by reducing backpressure in your exhaust system. you do however need to find out if this header is coated. normaly they are ceramic coated to help with heat disapation. if they are not then youll need to get header wrap and wrap them. the rapid change in exhaust temperatures actually causes turbulence and will cause you to not get the full potential of your new header. Here's a few choices of headers.

Megan header + downpipe - 273.85
Some Random Brand - 179.99
Ebay 39.99 to xxxx

Exhaust

An exhaust is going to also help you out in your little N/A build..Now don't cheap out like I did in the begining and just buy a muffler. Get a cat back, heres a few choices..Again i'll include some generic ones, as well as expensive ones.

Greddy Ti-C - 527.99
Apexi N1 - 489.99
Ebay 240sx Cat backs - 100 and on

Camshafts

Now cams, theres really no cheap brands..and you don't wanna cheap out on these..pretty much, theres a few good brands and I'll list them. I really don't know anything about cams so, if any one else does..go ahead and add on to this..

KELFORD KA24DE(T) Stage 1 Cams - 569.99
Brian Crower Cams - 357.95

Weight Reduction

You can Remove your A/C. All the HVAC equipment, Change your battery to one that i'll have listed below. Remove your Windshield washer solvent tanks if you feel the need you don't need to spray your windows. You can remove the AIV, I have a write up for that. Remove most the Emissions crap..etc etc..

Other Upgrades

Fuel Pumps, Pulleys, and other things that can make a slight difference in your car. And things that should be upgraded. Like the Oil Drain Pan Plug that is magnetic..When you drain your oil, and theirs metal pieces on it, you should pull your motor apart...haha.

Walbro Fuel Pump - 99.00
Unorthodox Crank Pulley - 250.00
Circuit Sports Magenetic Drain Plug - 9.99
Shuriken 850 Amp 14 Lb. Battery - 119.99

PART TWO by Diggles240

Keep removing stuff...

I think it is best to look at a budget 'build' from the stand point of increasing the efficiency of the engine and associated components. For example, remove any unecessary load from the engine, i.e. clutch fan, ac, etc. and then proceed with other minor modifications that are in line with your end goal.

Budget Camshafts

I would add the s13 cam swap for a true budget build. This swap is cost effective and has proven results.

Keep this in mind

As with any upgrade or modification, it is very important to consider your main objective for the car. Keep in mind that many modifications are going to shift the powerband in the car. A header will actually decrease low end torque and increase top end power. A larger diameter exhaust will do the same. So, if you are looking for low end responsiveness, which is required for auto-x or general daily 'fun', you may want to re-think this type of modification.

More will be added to this list later when i have more time on my hands. I took some time out to do this, about an hour. So give me some credit and feedback. Its not the best but i tried.

I am fabricating custom intake tubing that uses the stock air box and relocates/enlarges the air intake point. If going the 'cold air intake' rout, buy or fabricate a heat shield since these systems often place the intake filter on the hot side of the engine adjacent to the exhaust manifold (thus the reason for most CAIs being referred to as HAIs (hot air intakes).

Otherwise, good idea Nick and I think we can build on this as a group and then clean up the thread at the end for a very good sticky.

What about tuning? Something like an safc? I don't really know much about tuning...

Feel free to add any information in my post that you feel is pertinent. However, Blake mentioned the SAFC.

Forget this post. The two things I mentioned are already in the list.

another simple thing for the sohc guys is the dohc swap...it raises compression on the motor to like 10:1 iirc and depending on your powerband needs you can make a custom intake plentum (mine cost me like 50 bucks in materials)..just remember it shifts the band twards top end instead of bottom end...other things i dont believe are in the earlier post are emmissions delete to include a test pipe

How hard is it to remove the clutch fan?

Remove the rad shroud and then remove the (4) nuts that hold the propeller on. Its not too bad...if you have small hands.

Yeah, It takes about 15 minutes? You use an Open end wrench, because its such an awkward spot. should be 10mm.

Advance timing and run higher octane fuel, install a grounding kit onto your car. upgrade the ignition system. KA24E pistons have higher compression and can be used in the DE engine. Change gear ratios of transmission or rear end.

If you do those things along with weight reduction, you can prob get just as quick times as slapping on a T25 turbo.

This is a good thread guys. Maybe the new s14 will see a few of these things...

By higher octane, do you mean race gas? Doesn't everyone run 91 or 93 octane anyway? I have heard a lot of very mixed reviews, most of which are not positive from a performance stand point, regarding grounding kits. The concept of replacing 20 year old wiring is excellent, but I do not undertand how this could be a recognizable performance enhancement. Also, how much are you changing the final drive from the stock 3.906? Interesting points though man.

Keep this going guys. Any other ideas- proven or not, lets discuss.
