if i get a J30 diff will it change the way i accelerate... since the stock 240 diff is 4.08 and the J30 is a 3.92 gear ratio???

im wondering if i should get my diff welded or go with a vlsd cause i dont want to kill my tires fast since i will daily drive it most of the time

It will have a slight effect on acceleration (higher gear), but should not be terribly noticeable I would think. Keep in mind that you will always be taking a risk with a used VLSD.

VLSDs are good for DD. If you pull one yourself you can usually be sure that someone with a J30 hasnt been drifting around too much on it. I pulled one with 220,xxx miles and it hooked very well and i never had a problem with it. I would obvs not recommend getting one with that many miles since it could have been worn from so many miles but you never know.
Again you will need one with 6 bolt (3 X2) output shafts unless you wanna play with axles, hubs, different output shafts etc.
As far as DD a welded diff idk how bad they are on tires since tires never last me more than a month or so anyway (i drift turns... a lot). but i cant imagine it hurts them too much. It will give you better traction and predictability it most cases but in the snow, well in the snow your skrewed any which way, but in the rain you just have to be a bit more careful and not drive like a ricer.
The J30 VLSD does have a slightly larger gear ratio than the stock diff however in my first car i would barely notice till i got to cruising speed on the highway and my rpms would be a tiny bit under 3xxx in 5th gear at 70.
All around the J30 is a great diff for a DD. If you pick one yourself out of a lower mileage J30 you should have no issue with it being good or bad. And If you pick it yourself you will save a lot of money. I got mine from barbies for 50 bucks back in the day :D

shorter gear. acceleration will be slower with a J30. but i 100000000000000000000000000000000% agree with what kevin said about taking a change with a used VLSD....go through my build thread and find where i ended up in a 3 foot ditch due to a hicas diff breaking on me. please please please be careful if you go that route, if you dont know much about LSDs take it to someone who does and have it taken apart and looked at, trust me it would be in your best interest. if youre looking to drift, i HIGHLY recommend just welding your diff, its a lot safer (except in snow) and a lot more reliable, plus its predictable.

but what nick said applies, someone with a J30 probably hasnt been drifting around on it, but youre still talking about something with prob over 200,000 miles on it. VLSDs use the same kind of paper clutches that an automatic transmission uses, just FYI.

IMO factory nissan VLSDs are a MAJOR fail, 9/10 times they wont lock even if they are good. i have 3 times i can mention of a factory VLSD locking. 1) i drove my boys NA Z32, it locked hard, both tires spun 1st-3rd 2)same Z32 did a MASSIVE burnout clear to the top of 2nd, put down over 100ft of rubber when he came off the brakes, both tires spun. and 3)a local drifter, ryan, has a bone stock s14 SE and he slides his car all the time with no diff problems.

Its a terminology thing Matt. We meant the same thing. By higher gear, I meant less RPMs at cruising speed and slower acceleration/ lower gear= faster accel. and more RPMs at cruising speed :)

Biggamehit has a write-up about shimming a factory vlsd to act as a 1.5 - 2 way differential... You could try that..

Welded diff is never a good idea.

If you get a J30 differential that is 94 or newer I believe that you will only need to swap the diff cover, aka no new half shafts.

What diff you want should have the engine you want factored in. What are you swapping to?
