here's an easy way to set base timing while completely shit faced.

1. pull spark #1 spark plug
2. stuff a folded and rolled paper towel in the tube "should be tight as hell"
3. turn motor motor over by hand using a ratchet
4. when the paper towel shoots out, your on compression stroke, put a 12" extension in the spark tube hole which sits on top of the piston, look for it to top out, don't let it go down, your just looking for the highest point it sits at. "this is top dead center"
5. line up the dot on the gear and lone on the dizzy and slide back in so it's allows you to advance or retard timing.
(optional)
6. if you are having issues with the dizzy, another back yard method is to take the cap off the dizzy too. reason, while sliding the dizzy in make sure the rotor button is pointing at the #1 point of the dizzy, (holding the dizzy in front of you with the connector facing the front of the car) is the top left.
#1 #2
#3 #4
This may take a few times pulling the dizzy out and putting it back in slowly until you get it right, since the gear turns the rotor button when the dizzy is being inserted.
Firing order on the valve cover should is:
#1 #2 #3 #4
connect the wires #1 to #1, #2 to #2 and so on.
7. now try and start the car, if everything is done right the car should start up, now use a timing light to double check the timing on the crank.
